Electroplating and surface finishing

RENNER pumps and filters for electroplating and surface finishing

Electroplating and surface finishing includes a large number of complex electro-chemical processes and applications, which require the use of special pumps and filters.

The usually aggressive or toxic liquids used result in stringent requirements in terms of the materials in our pumps and filters. In terms of load bearing capacity and durability, all components of a RENNER pump have to be totally reliable to guarantee a consistently perfect end result and maximum process reliability. This applies not just to the actual electroplating method but the entire process chain, such as degreasing, etching, purging, after-treatment and filtration using special RENNER filter systems.

Renner pumps – Applications

Electroplating involves very different methods depending on the end product. Our partners in the industry therefore come from many fields, e.g. automotive engineering, computer technology, electrical engineering, chemicals, and medicine.

RENNER pumps are used as standard in the following methods:

  • Strip electroplating
  • Band plating
  • Rack plating
  • Manual electroplating
  • Electroplating of plastics
  • Wire finishing
  • Ceramic printing
  • Wet chemical etching of glass and silicon substrates
  • Precious metal recovery
  • Anodizing (electrolytic oxidation of aluminum)
  • Chathodic dip coating (CDC)
  • Deburring, electro-polishing, and anodizing of precision metal parts
  • Bacteria inhibition in electroplating baths
  • Exhaust air scrubbers
  • Waste water treatment

RENNER pump systems – Overview

Different RENNER pump types are used according to the relevant electroplating method and the application. As well as centrifugal immersion pumps, which are most frequently used, these can also be magnetic centrifugal pumps. The choice of a particular pump system is based on customer-specific requirements and applications.

As well as stationary use, RENNER pumps are also hugely effective in mobile applications. These include:

  • Mobile filter stations (e.g. REN-ADSORB)
Mobile manual electroplating systems
  • Mini pumps and filters
  • Moving machines for continuous forward and backward movement of goods carriers

Our centrifugal immersion pumps are particularly widely used where the electroplating process does not allow magnetic coupling, or the system concept includes directly fitted or immersed pumps.

Our product range includes centrifugal immersion pumps for both very low flow rates (< 30 l/min) and very high flow rates (> 1,000 l/min).
We also supply suitable products for high tanks, which require a corresponding immersion length (up to 500 mm without intermediate bearings and therefore protected against dry running).

RENNER centrifugal immersion pumps are outstandingly well suited for conveying and circulating aggressive, toxic, or abrasive materials.
Depending on the actual chemical or thermal requirements, our pump components are made of different materials chosen to meet the relevant demands. This guarantees consistently high performance and also a long service life.

RENNER centrifugal immersion pumps are designed for vertical installation in depressurized tanks, open pools, or pits. This extends the range of applications for the different electroplating methods. They are available as a sealless version (RTM) or, if there is a lack of space inside the tank, for vertical installation on the outside of the tank (RT-A).

Certain electroplating processes require the use of a magnetic centrifugal pump. In contrast to centrifugal immersion pumps, their magnetic coupling allows contactless torque transmission.

RENNER magnetic centrifugal pumps have a hermetically sealed design and are completely leak free. These properties make them ideal for conveying aggressive liquids outside process tanks.

They are normally installed outside an immersion tank or medium and integrated into the overall system with corresponding piping, for example on safety grounds, due to space considerations, or for design reasons.

The layers created in the electroplating process are extremely thin, which is why any impurity in the process baths due to dirt particles has to be prevented from the outset. RENNER filters deliver exceptional long-term performance for all methods – including pre-treatment, metal precipitation, purging, and post-treatment. The same applies for necessary secondary processes, such as waste water and exhaust air treatment.

RPR Control, the electronic process monitoring system from RENNER, protects both the pumps and the electroplating process itself. It issues warnings relating to clogged filters, a risk of dry and hot running, overloads and in critical situations, and reliably shuts down the pumps before any damage can occur. At the same time, the control module checks adherence to the set flow rate. This prevents time-consuming and costly failures.

RENNER supplies an extensive range of filters for industrial solid-liquid separation. The main products available are filter cartridges, bags and paper, as well as adsorption media, such as “spaghetti” filters, “angel’s hair”, or active carbon.
RENNER supplies the required consumables for all filter housings.
